The Triple Crown of Barnwood Furniture
It’s that time of year again! Time for the mint juleps to flow freely, the black-eyed susans to come together into a wreath of gold, and for a racetrack in New York to perhaps determine whether one of sport’s greatest athletes will once again be crowned. Beginning with the first Saturday in May, the Triple Crown of horse racing begins. The best three-year-old Thoroughbreds in the country meet for a showdown at Churchill Downs, knowing that only one can emerge as a Kentucky Derby champion. With great anticipation the country follows the Derby winner two weeks later to Pimlico Downs in Baltimore, hoping that the Derby winner can pull off yet another victory at the Preakness Stakes. Only eleven horses have gone on to win the third and longest race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes in New York. Being crowned with winning all three races in five weeks is considered one of the ultimate achievements in sports, the last being Affirmed in 1978.
I have been horse crazy ever since I was a little girl. When my birthday and Christmas came around, model horses instead of dolls were at the top of my wish list. I even wished for my own horse, and I was lucky enough to have parents that got me one when I was in elementary school. Dandy, my pony, started a love of a lifetime. For me, there is something so special and relaxing about being around horses. I felt at home, so it was natural for me to want to spend all of my time learning and taking in all I could about horses. And every spring, I would wait with anticipation for Derby week and the beginning of the Triple Crown.
I suppose it’s true that many sports have their own version of the Triple Crown. JHE’s Log Furniture Place even has a special version of that same concept. You may not be crowned as a winner or as an ultimate athlete, but you can feel pretty special and wow your visitors with their trifecta of barnwood furniture. You can outfit your living room, bedroom, and dining room with reclaimed barn wood furniture pieces. If you’re feeling so inclined, you can watch each leg of the Triple Crown every spring from a different barnwood-decorated room in your home. Just think, the wood in your furniture may have housed a race-bred Thoroughbred at one time in its life. Just by sitting on your dining room chair, you may be touching greatness. If that doesn’t help you to feel more a part of the action, I don’t know what will.
